The Department of Neuroimaging is focused on the research and development of neuroimaging techniques from basic science to clinical application. We aspire to making brain imaging an essential clinical tool in both neurology and psychiatry as we devise innovative imaging methods to measure brain structure, function, physiology and metabolism.

About the role:

Applications are invited to join a team of researchers exploring cognitive dysfunction in clinical populations. A research technician position is available in Professor Steve Williams’ research group, based in the Department of Neuroimaging.

The post holder will assist in remote and in-person studies of cognition, with a primary focus on a study assessing the relationship between language patterns, functional capacity, and cognitive performance in individuals with depression, psychosis, and healthy controls. The study consists of three parts: Parts 1 and 3 involve remote assessments with participants conducted via Zoom and at-home assessments on a tablet, while Part 2 includes two in-person visits at the Clinical Research Facility at King’s College Hospital, where participants complete various clinical, cognitive, and functional assessments.

The post holder will be responsible for participant recruitment and data collection, including: 1) approaching and screening potential participants, 2) scheduling remote and in-person study visits, and 3) collecting, entering, and auditing study data. In addition, they will have the opportunity to contribute to an upcoming neuroimaging study aimed at establishing neuroimaging techniques to identify brain circuits underlying cognitive dysfunction across disorders.

The successful applicant will become familiar with administering and scoring standard clinical and neuropsychological assessments used in research settings and will have the opportunity to learn about neuroimaging data collection.

This is an ideal position for psychology or neuroscience graduates who wish to gain experience in human mental health research and are planning to apply for a PhD or Clinical Psychology Doctorate in the future.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 12 months.

	First or 2:1 undergraduate degree in Psychology, Neuroscience or another related field or equivalent

	Ability to work as part of a team, ability to work independently and to deadlines

Desirable criteria


	Completion of research placement / internship as part of undergraduate degree
	Experience working with vulnerable populations such as people with mental health conditions
	Experience in collecting data as part of a research study
	Experience of carrying out clinical and/or cognitive assessments
	Knowledge of psychiatric disorders and cognitive dysfunction

The Role

Duties

The appointee will be required to:

The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) is a grant-funded, interdisciplinary research centre located in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. SCIS seeks to make an appointment at the level of professor/associate professor to undertake the following:


	Oversee the research programme at SCIS;
	Produce high-quality research;
	Advance existing research within the SCIS, and/or develop new areas of research;
	Contribute to the leadership of the centre.


REQUIREMENTS:


	A PhD is required for an appointment at the level of Professor/Associate Professor.
	Ten or more years of research experience, and knowledge of theoretical and empirical debates focussing on issues of inequality, inclusive development, and the economy in South Africa, Africa and the global South.
	At least 10 years of experience designing, implementing and managing research projects in an academic setting.?
	Excellent research skills, and proven ability to produce accredited publications with a record of high-quality accredited journal/book publications.
	A proven track record of effective university teaching, and evidence of graduating PhD and Masters students.
	An interest in curriculum development, teaching, and learning on issues related to inequality.
	A high level of motivation and a commitment to progressive policy formulation for South Africa and the global South.
	Interested in engaging in policy spaces particularly in South Africa and across the global South.
	Experience working in an organisational environment similar to SCIS would be an advantage.

Description

The research group of Prof. Sunil Kumar in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Postdoctoral fellow or research scientist to conduct research in the area of computational heat transfer and machine learning for radiative transfer in scattering media.

The successful applicant will use machine learning for solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) systems optimization, computational heat transfer and radiative transport using sophisticated numerical modeling and machine learning approaches for forward and inverse problems in radiation and fire research. The research associate will be responsible for simulation-based analysis for object detection methods and for optimization of solar energy applications. The applicant must be able to independently design, plan, and carry out the research project tasks as well as co-mentor doctoral researchers, and write journal and conference papers. The rank of postdoctoral fellow or research scientist will depend on the qualifications of the candidate selected.

The position is for the duration of 2 years starting on January 1, 2025, and it can be renewed based on performance and availability of funds.

Applicants must have a PhD in mechanical engineering, and experience with computational heat transfer and machine learning for heat transfer, especially radiation.
