Basic information and contact details for College of Charleston

institution

The College of Charleston is the 13th oldest university in the US. The first public liberal arts and sciences-based institution in South Carolina, it draws favourable comparisons nationally for its combination of teaching excellence and location, at the heart of Charleston.

The oldest institution in South Carolina, it was established when the US was still a British colony, in 1770, graduating its first students in 1794. A number of its founders were important figures in the American Revolution. In 1837, it became the first municipal college in the country. The college briefly closed during the Civil War. It became a state institution in 1970, and postgraduate studies became available?two years later.

The coastal city of Charleston is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the South, famed for its history, and its streets lined with cobbles and palm trees. With its horse-drawn carriages, and 18th?and 19th?century architecture, it feels relatively unchanged compared to most American cities, and millions visit each year. The French-influenced city is also known as the birthplace of the Charleston dance, first popularised in the 1920s. With a lively atmosphere and several higher education institutions, it is a fun place for young people to live in.

The college focuses on giving its students a broad knowledge base prior to choosing their major towards the end of second year. Charleston has eight schools, and an acclaimed marine biology course.

Its alumni include Robert Mills, generally seen as the first US-born architect, best-known for designing the Washington Monument and the US Department of the Treasury, both in Washington DC.
