Deraya University was founded in 2010 in New Minya, Southern Egypt, supervised by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education.

Deraya University has five undergraduate programmes including pharmacy (PharmD and PharmD Clinical), physiotherapy, dentistry, and business administration and four graduate programmes including pharmaceutical sciences, medicinal pharmacy, physical therapy basic sciences, and orthopedics.

The university also has the Deraya Center for Research and Sustainability, Deraya Academy for Continuing Education, Deraya Teaching and Learning Center, and the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Chair for Sustainable Peace.

The university has several international partnerships, and is part of the United Nations Academic Impact initiative, which focuses on sharing a culture of intellectual social responsibility. Deraya University is also committed to being active in the local community, through the provision of literacy classes and patient support activities.

New Minya gets its name from the Ancient Egyptian ※Men*at Khufu§, which translates as the nursing city of Khufu. The city is home to many archeological sites, including Tuna El-Gebel, Tel Al-Amarna and El-Bahnasa, containing monuments from different Greek and Ancient Egyptian periods. The city also contains a significant Christianity site, the Monastery of the Virgin, where the Holy Family stayed during their time in Egypt.
