East Africa University was founded in 1998 in Bosaso. It is a private, non-profit university.
While the main campus, with a focus on business and social sciences, remains in Bosaso, there are also sites in Buhodie, Golgogob, Golkayo, Cardho, Garowe and at Erigavo across the border in Somaliland. The Garowe campus was expanded after 2013.
Students are admitted on the basis of an entry exam, with a success rate below 30 per cent.
Students can study courses in business and management, information science and technology, social science and economics, medical and health science, civil and telecommunications engineering, sharia and law, and veterinary and animal science.
Medical students are offered the chance of one-year internships at international partner hospitals in Kenya and Uganda.
