Founded in 1991 as the University of the Intifada, Elmergib University was renamed as Nasser University in 1992, before taking on its current name in 2001, when its administrative offices moved to the port city of Al Khums.?
Its 22 faculties are spread across four campuses, in four cities. These faculties are grouped together into three colleges: the faculty of arts, which covers subjects including law, archaeology and Sharia studies; medical colleges, covering medicine, pharmacy and dentistry; and scientific colleges, covering subjects such as engineering, economics and information technology.
The university publishes 14 academic journals, and organises a range of conferences, on subjects such as law, economics and engineering.
