The Funda??o Oswaldo Cruz is an institution which focuses on research and development in the sciences. The university is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It was founded by Dr Oswaldo Cruz, a noted physician and epidemiologist. It was founded in 1900 and has since gone on to contribute to the eradication of the bubonic plague and yellow fever in Rio de Janeiro.
The Institute was also a key player in the creation of the National Department of Public Health in 1920.
The institute carries out many research projects into a range of conditions such as AIDS, malaria, Chagas disease, tuberculosis, leprosy, measles, rubella, schistosomiasis, meningitis and hepatitis. The institute also conducts research to other topics related to public health, including violence and climate change.
Some 32 graduate programmes are on offer at the institute.
