The Benguela Higher Institute of Educational Sciences was set up in 1992, in response to an appeal launched by more than 4,500 high-school students. It opened its doors in 1994, when its 202 students were taught by a staff of 19.
Today, there are considerably more staff and students, working on seven bachelor¡¯s degree courses and three master¡¯s subjects.
All courses relate to teacher training, so undergraduates can study: special education; teaching geography; teaching history; teaching French language; English-language teaching; teaching Portuguese language; and teaching mathematics. Master¡¯s students can specialise in: curricular development and educational innovation; special education; and methodology of primary education.
Students and academic staff participate in conferences and roundtable sessions.
