Karaganda Medical University has a history that dates back to 1931 when a medical university was founded in Alma-Ata. In 1940 it was moved to Karaganda city where there was a growing need to open a medical institute. It wasn¡¯t until 1950 that the institute first opened its doors to students.

In 1966, the university opened the Central Research Laboratory.
