Established in 2009 as a constituent college of Gulu University, Lira University gained full university status in 2015 through an Act of Parliament. Located in Lira, a city in northern Uganda, it is approximately 110 kilometres southwest of Gulu and 124 kilometres northwest of Soroti.
Lira University is divided into six faculties, offering a range of degree programs. It has a teaching hospital serving as a training centre for medical students and providing comprehensive healthcare services to the public. The university's library has transformed into a modern academic library, enhancing its teaching and research capabilities.
