Maryam Abacha American University of Niger is the first English-speaking university in the Republic of Niger, and the first bilingual university in sub-Saharan Africa. Established in 2013, it is named for a former first lady of Niger, renowned for her charitable works.
It is located in Maradi, the Republic of Niger¡¯s second-largest city, on the border with Nigeria. Across the border, another Maryam Abacha American University educates students in the Nigerian city of Kano.
There are seven faculties, each offering a number of degree courses: engineering and applied science; law; health sciences; business studies; social and management sciences; language; and agricultural science and engineering.
There are a number of sports teams. The university also provides a range of workshops and events, which provide careers information and skills, and enhance students¡¯ industry-specific knowledge.
