The Riddet Institute is a world-best research centre in food and nutritional sciences, providing fundamental scientific understanding and training for a new generation of science leaders. The Riddet Institute includes a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) that integrates partner organisations (Massey University, Auckland and Otago Universities, AgResearch and Plant and Food Research) and disciplines. Collectively, this leads to a 'NZ Inc' approach to food research and generates knowledge and capability that transforms the New Zealand food sector.

The Riddet Institute has developed in vitro models that individually simulate the behaviour of various parts of the human gastrointestinal tract in terms of food breakdown and nutrient absorption. One such example is the Human Gastric Simulator (HGS), a dynamic model of the stomach, and we are seeking a high-achieving researcher with a strong background in food science or food engineering to work on a research programme to characterise the breakdown of food in models of the human gastrointestinal tract.

The successful candidate will undertake research using these in vitro models to characterise the breakdown and properties of food during digestion and compare this with in vivo data to develop improved dynamic in vitro models, giving us a better understanding of the breakdown behaviour of different foods and the dynamic absorption of nutrients.

As the successful candidate you will have the following:

PhD in food science, food engineering or a related discipline Strong interest in the understanding of food behaviour in the human digestive system Demonstrated practical experience and a proven track record in working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team to achieve defined objectives Prior laboratory experience is essential, preferably with experience in testing the physical properties of biological materials Knowledge of human digestive physiology, and the ability to work with engineers in the further development of the in vitro models, is desirable Why Palmerston North?

We are seeking to appoint an Enterprise Fellow as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies in E-Textiles Engineering. The position is part of a research team working on electronic textiles for wearable and industrial applications. The holder of this post will work on applying electronic technologies developed for integration with textiles including flexible wireless sensing circuits, RFID-based sensing technologies, and wireless power transfer technologies within e-textiles for wearable and IoT applications. This role builds upon world-leading research developed with the research team and will have a strong focus on developing the technologies towards commercial exploitation.

You will work in a large dynamic interdisciplinary team of research fellows and PhD candidates researching different aspects of e-textile systems.

A successful candidate will have:


	A PhD or equivalent experience in electronic engineering with a focus on practical electronics design skills, including PCB design for analog circuits along with experience with low-power microcontrollers such as Arm Cortex-M and MSP430 devices.
	Embedded software development experience (C/C++) as well as scripting experience in Python/Matlab (desirable).
	The ability to meet with clients and stakeholders, discuss and propose specifications/solutions and build relationships.
	An entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm for exploiting research either through spin offs or licencing and communicating technologies in writing and in-person to technical and non-technical audiences.

The position is opened at the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry located in Viikki campus in Helsinki. The appointed person will be affiliated to the Future Sustainable Food Systems (FS)2 -research group led by Professor Hanna Tuomisto.

The task of the postdoctoral researcher is to carry out world leading research related to sustainability assessment of future food system scenarios. The focus is in estimating the potential of novel food production technologies (e.g. cellular agriculture and vertical farming) to improve the sustainability and resilience of food systems globally together with other options, such as agroecological farming, improvements in agricultural technologies, dietary change and improved circularity. The appointee is also expected to be involved in preparations of funding applications, supervision of MSc and PhD students and teaching activities at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.?

Requirements

We look for candidates in the field of sustainability assessment who:? have a doctoral degree granted before the beginning of employment?


	have experience in the field of life cycle assessment (LCA) of agriculture, food production and/or food systems (including a minimum of one scientific peer-review publication related to the topic) and experience in using LCA software (e.g. SimaPro, Gabi or OpenLCA)

What we offer

The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be c. 3500-4000 €/month depending on experience. A six-month trial period will be applied. The workplace of the position is at Viikki campus in Helsinki.

Cell biological studies of antibody-based therapeutics

Centre for Cancer Immunology, University of Southampton

This position will be held in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital. This is a recently constructed, dedicated research building that is the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. It builds on a 40-year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton and represents the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK. The activities in this centre span from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and, crucially, onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond. The centre houses world-class research facilities, including state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and a clinical trials unit.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Sally Ward and Raimund Ober. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the use of protein engineering to develop novel antibody-based therapeutics that has led to several therapeutics that are currently approved for clinical use or in advanced stages of clinical trials. The group is also actively involved in the development of advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their interdisciplinary research is funded by major grants from the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.

The appointee will carry out fluorescence microscopy analyses, flow cytometry and other in vitro cellular assays of engineered antibody-based therapeutics. The appointee is expected to have an outstanding track record in fluorescence microscopy and other in vitro cell-based assays. A background in purifying recombinant proteins/antibodies is also desirable but not essential. An ability to independently manage research projects is required.

The appointee will also play a supervisory role and will be responsible for advising junior technicians in the laboratory. The ability to train other members of the laboratory is a requirement of the position. The research projects involve teamwork between laboratory members carrying out molecular and cellular analyses. The appointee will therefore be expected to enjoy working as a team member who plays a central role in the research productivity of the group.

The position offers ample opportunities for professional development and career advancement, and pursuit of these by the appointee will be actively encouraged and supported. For example, the research projects for this post is closely related to the interests of biopharma, and will involve close interactions with this sector.

Scientific knowledge and proven leadership in the areas described above equivalent to Ph.D. level with at least 2-3 years of additional experience is required. The post-holder will possess relevant academic qualifications and work experience as well as good IT skills. Non-UK/non-EU citizens are also encouraged to apply.

This position is expected to be one of the key long-term positions in the Ward/Ober laboratory, with the initial time period of two years being limited by the term of current support.
