Professor/Associate Professor

The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) is a grant-funded, interdisciplinary research centre located in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. SCIS seeks to make an appointment at the level of professor/associate professor to undertake the following:


	Oversee the research programme at SCIS;
	Produce high-quality research;
	Advance existing research within the SCIS, and/or develop new areas of research;
	Contribute to the leadership of the centre.


REQUIREMENTS:


	A PhD is required for an appointment at the level of Professor/Associate Professor.
	Ten or more years of research experience, and knowledge of theoretical and empirical debates focussing on issues of inequality, inclusive development, and the economy in South Africa, Africa and the global South.
	At least 10 years of experience designing, implementing and managing research projects in an academic setting.?
	Excellent research skills, and proven ability to produce accredited publications with a record of high-quality accredited journal/book publications.
	A proven track record of effective university teaching, and evidence of graduating PhD and Masters students.
	An interest in curriculum development, teaching, and learning on issues related to inequality.
	A high level of motivation and a commitment to progressive policy formulation for South Africa and the global South.
	Interested in engaging in policy spaces particularly in South Africa and across the global South.
	Experience working in an organisational environment similar to SCIS would be an advantage.


The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate congruence with SCIS’ existing research foci or specify a new area of research related to inequality in the global South. This is a permanent academic position, subject to the standard Wits academic appointment procedures, with an attractive remuneration package and conditions of service. About the Roles

Lecturer in Structural Engineering - Prefabricated Concrete Systems

This role will focus on advancing the design, fabrication, and performance of prefabricated concrete structures with an emphasis on structural efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effective construction techniques. The successful candidate will work on an ARC-funded research project and contribute to the development of next-generation high-performance materials and topologically optimized structural designs.

Key Responsibilities:


	Conduct research in prefabricated concrete design, additive manufacturing, and structural optimization.
	Develop sustainable and eco-friendly fabrication methods to enhance structural performance.
	Publish high-impact research and attract external research funding.
	Deliver engaging and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
	Supervise higher degree by research (HDR) students in relevant fields.
	Establish and maintain strong industry collaborations in the field of structural engineering.


To be successful for this position, you will have (but are not limited to):


	PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
	Expertise in concrete material behavior, structural design, and manufacturing processes.
	Experience with topological optimization and digital fabrication techniques (e.g., 3D concrete printing).
	Strong research track record, including publications in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals
	Ability to deliver impactful teaching and develop curriculum content aligned with industry needs.


Lecturer in Fire Safety Engineering - Timber and Composite Structures

This role will focus on fire safety performance in timber and composite structures, with a particular emphasis on large-scale fire testing, fire dynamics, and computational modelling. The successful candidate will support a major ARC-funded project investigating fire-resistant engineered timber systems for sustainable construction.

Key Responsibilities:


	Conduct research on fire safety engineering, fire testing, and timber composite behaviour under fire conditions.
	Conduct mid- to large-scale fire testing and contribute to the development of fire-resistant construction materials.
	Utilise fire dynamics simulators and computational models to assess fire spread and mitigation strategies.
	Teach and develop course materials in fire safety engineering and civil engineering disciplines.
	Supervise HDR students and provide mentorship for emerging researchers.
	Engage with industry partners and regulatory bodies to enhance fire safety standards


To be successful for this position, you will have (but are not limited to):


	PhD in Fire Safety Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, or a related field.
	Expertise in fire testing, fire dynamics, and performance-based fire safety design.
	Experience in numerical modelling of fire behaviour using computational tools (e.g., Fire Dynamics Simulator).
	Strong publication record in fire safety research and related fields.
	Ability to develop and deliver high-quality teaching materials in fire engineering and related subjects.

The School of Engineering is one of the largest Engineering Schools in Australia. It has over 350 staff and 7000 students, including 750 HDR students. Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position in the areas of the areas of extrasolar and solar system planets at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) with Dr. Ian Dobbs-Dixon. Areas associated with planetary atmospheres, planetary formation, interior evolution, and gravitational dynamics align with ongoing research at NYUAD, but other areas of interest are also encouraged. Positions are for 2 1 years and include competitive salaries and generous benefits including housing and educational subsidies for children.

Researchers will be expected to bring experience and expertise in areas such as radiative transfer, atmospheric chemistry, hydrodynamics, planetary structure, N-body calculations, planetary formation, retrieval calculations, or interior modelling. Astrophysical research at NYUAD spans a wide range of topics, including astroparticle studies, stellar and planetary physics, compact objects, and cosmological simulations, allowing researchers to interact with a wide swath of topics. In parallel to the academic departments at NYUAD, Institute Programs serve to significantly enhance research activities, including the Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS). Overall, more than 30 postdoctoral researchers are involved with astrophysics, providing a rich environment for research.

Research at NYUAD into planetary physics is heavily supported at both the institutional and national levels. Locally, NYUAD has access to significant on-campus computational resources, including a 60,000 core Infiniband Cluster dedicated to the science division and to other supercomputer facilities through the CASS network. Nationally, the commitment to Space Science has increased exponentially, culminating most recently in the successful insertion of the Al Amal Spacecraft into the Martian atmosphere. The next years will see a lunar and asteroid missions as well. Overall, the commitment to planetary science at NYUAD and within the UAE promises to spur significant advancements, allow for scientific innovation, and provide future opportunities.
