    UNIST is a warm and welcoming post-secondary institution located in the heart of South Korea's largest industrial city, Ulsan where world-renowned automotive, shipbuilding, petrochemical, and secondary cells industries are clustered.

    Since its opening in 2009, UNIST has grown to become a world-class university, with a rapidly growing reputation for its research and impact on a wide range of fields. Leading scholars from all around the world have been invited to deliver outstanding scientific results and education. UNIST's research facilities, along with its world-class laboratory and state-of-the-art research equipment became an envy of many scientists around the world.

    In a short history, UNIST's bold moves have propelled it to become one of world's leading science and technology universities. UNIST is enhancing its competitiveness through scientific collaboration with scholars from international universities.

    UNIST is the only university in South Korea where 100% of lectures are conducted in English. We set standard by bringing a new sensation to the world of education. UNIST has opened its gates to invite gifted students and world-leading scientists from all over the world who dream and have potential of becoming the next Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Bill Gates.

    In recent years, UNIST has been designated as one of the world's foremost graphene R&D institutions, hosting three IBS campus-based research centers. These research centers will be receiving $255 million (as of 2015 Dec.) in funding for 10 years from the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), South Korea. With support from the Government of Korea and the city of Ulsan, UNIST hopes to contribute to the development of local industry and economy through transferring the research experience, knowledge, and technology of its scientists.

    UNIST has also won many large-scale national R&D projects, such as Green Energy Material Technology Development Center with funding of $1.7 billion for 5 years and New Growth Engine Project Group with funding of $1.61 billion for 5 years.

    In 2015, UNIST made the leap from a national university to a government-funded research institute, marking the first major step in realizing its vision to be ranked in the top 10 of globally competitive universities by 2030.This status change of UNIST signifies a new beginning, in essence, rebirth of UNIST. This would not only bring UNIST to range with three other Korea's S&T Research Institutes, KAIST, GIST, and DGIST, but also a wider international recognition for UNIST researchers.

    UNIST continues to strive to make an impact with its leading-edge research, promoting scientific collaboration with other countries as a driving force for excellence.

    Research Excellence

    UNIST now stands at the center of global research with its cutting edge research equipment. We create the best research outcomes based on optimal research environment. UNIST continues to invest in state-of-the-art research facilities and to enhance working and social space for ambitious young researchers. UNIST has hosted 3 IBS on-campus research groups, led by world-renowned scientists with funding of over KRW 200 billion. Moreover, in the field of secondary batteries, UNIST has been ranked in the top 3 in the world along with MIT and Stanford University.
