A public university in Alice, Eastern Cape, South Africa, the University of Fort Hare was one of the main institutes of higher education for Africans from 1916 to 1959.

Today the university has six faculties including health sciences, social sciences and humanities, education, management and commerce, science and agriculture and the Nelson R Mandela school of law.

The main campus is found in Alice near the Tyhume River in the Eastern Cape Province some 50km west of King William's Town. At last count this campus attracted around 6,400 students.

A second campus at the Eastern Cape provincial capital of Bhisho is home to a few hundred students and the third campus in East London attracts around 4,300 students each year. Each campus has its own library.

The university conducts research in a range of areas including water resource management, sustainable agriculture and land use strategies, culture, heritage and social transformation, and rural household economics.
