The University of Veterinary Medicine in Ko?ice is the only institution in Slovakia offering higher education for veterinary studies. It is a one faculty university providing undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education in veterinary fields.
The university is located in Ko?ice, which is the largest city in eastern Slovakia. It has a population of around 240,000, making it the second largest city in Slovakia after the capital city of Bratislava.
The university was established by an Act of the Slovak National Council in 1949 and began teaching its first students shortly thereafter. Its inauguration was preceded by many years of effort to establish such a school in Slovakia, as prior to the university's establishment students interested in veterinary studies had to go abroad.
The university has also provided veterinary education in English for some 15 years and the credit system on offer here is compatible with the European Credit Transfer System.
The focus is on practical preparation and students have ongoing contact with animals, not only at the five clinics at the university but also at the university farm. There is also a university facility for breeding and a dedicated Equestrian centre.
There is student accommodation located 500m away from the university campus and canteens for students to use.
