Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University was established in 1875 as the Franz-Josephs-Universit?t Czernowitz. The university was a Romanian higher education institution until the reunification of Northern Bukovina with Ukraine in 1940 when it was recognised as a higher education institution in Ukraine. The university is located in Chernivtsi, a city in western Ukraine. The city has a rich and complex history, having been a town in Moldavia before it was passed to the Turks, Austrians, Romanians and finally the Soviet Union in 1940. Since the 20th century Chernivtsi has been an important industrial centre, specialising in woollen and cotton textile processing, food processing, timber working and light engineering.
