The next Times Higher Education Young Universities Summit will be hosted in partnership with the Higher School of Economics (HSE University) in Moscow next year.

The event, which will take place from 24 to 26 June 2020, will explore the theme “local impact, global influence” and discuss how young universities can expand their spheres of influence both internationally and locally.

Leaders of “young” universities – institutions established since 1945 – will examine how they can ensure they use their relative youth as a resource rather than a limitation, debate the relative efficacy of different national excellence initiatives, discuss how they can prepare students for success in the fourth industrial revolution, and share best practice models of cross-disciplinary and multi-institutional working.

The event will also feature the launch of the THE Young University Rankings 2020 and a data masterclass to examine the development of the THE University Impact Rankings.

Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer at THE, said: “The THE World Summit Series has become the preeminent global forum for university leaders, together with policymakers and industry chiefs, to gather and share new thinking about the future of world-class universities – and the Young Universities Summit has forged a unique space for dynamic, ambitious and forward-thinking universities, founded since 1945, to get together to plan for success in an uncertain future.”

He added that HSE University has “made tremendous progress on the world stage since its foundation in 1992, rising rapidly up the World University Rankings, so it epitomises the type of ambitious and strategically focussed institution that THE partners with”.

“We have an excellent programme planned for Moscow in June 2020, with a particular focus on the development of an institution’s social and economic impact – a vital issue facing today’s universities as their role in society comes under ever increasing public and political scrutiny,” he said.

Ivan Prostakov, vice rector at HSE University, said that the summit is?"an excellent platform for the most dynamic and open young universities, many of which already rank in the top 100 of global rankings, to share experiences and best practices in education and science".

"The participating universities strive not only to be competitive in the global market, but also to make a significant contribution to the development of their countries and their respective national education systems. The upcoming summit in 2020 will be specifically devoted to this issue."
