World University Rankings 2013-2014 coming 2 October 2013

The THE 100 Under 50 2013 will be released live online at 21.00 (BST or GMT+1) on 19 June and will be published in a free special supplement of Times Higher Education magazine on 20 June.

The rankings will be formally presented at the at Wellington College on Friday 21 June.

Antony Seldon, master of Wellington College, said: ¡°These are exciting times for anyone involved in education, and Times Higher Education¡¯s pioneering 100 Under 50 ranking not only provides a welcome insight into the rising stars of global higher education, but also heralds a shifting world order in innovation and research. In my opinion, it is the best ranking of its kind.¡±

The THE 100 Under 50 employs the same comprehensive range of 13 global performance indicators used in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings: covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

But after detailed consultation with the rankings¡¯ advisory board, the methodology of the world rankings was recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics of younger universities - with less weight given to reputational indicators which tend to benefit older, larger institutions, and more weight given to objective benchmarks.

Dr Seldon said that the 150-year-old Wellington College was ¡°sitting at the crossroads between tradition and change. And this change is a recognition of the profound transformations occurring across the world, and throughout education: the growing economies, particularly in the Far East, are investing heavily in education and research, creating and nurturing new institutions in a matter of years ¡ª rather than centuries ¡ª that are already challenging the traditional elite.

¡°The 100 Under 50 ranking will be launched at the Education Festival, which brings together leading thinkers, politicians, technology gurus, and academics to debate the future of learning in higher education.¡±

Speaking in 2012 when the THE 100 Under 50 was first published, Warwick University economics professor Andrew Oswald said: ¡°These results give us a glimpse of the likely future Harvards and Berkeleys¡once upon a time both Harvard and Berkeley were derided as Nowheresville.¡±
