Pay watch for vice chancellors

February 9, 1996

This table is derived from annual reports for 1994/95, the first year in which university sector institutions were required to disclose top salaries - although a considerable number did so voluntarily in 1993/94. In most cases institutions disclosed an "emoluments" figure covering pay and other benefits, but excluding pension contributions. This is the figure given in the table, except where the figure disclosed clearly incorporated pension payments. These cases are indicated by (incl) after the name of the institution. The financial year used ended on July 31, 1995. Some heads of institution have since left.

Some had been in post for less than a year. In these cases the amount they were paid during that period has been used to calculate a pro rata whole-year figure. These are indicated by (pro rata) after the institution's name. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Portsmouth University had acting heads for part of the year, making a genuine figure impossible to calculate. They have been excluded from the survey.
