China Subject Ratings 2020
The Times Higher Education China Subject Ratings 2020 measures university performance based on the Chinese Ministry of Education¡¯s classification of subjects. The methodology links closely to the THE World University Rankings, but the indicators have been adapted and recalibrated to explore university performance in China and beyond from a detailed perspective. The universities and their subjects are judged across five key areas ¨C teaching, research, citations, industry income and internationalisation.
The inaugural 2020 ratings includes 1,355 universities worldwide, 80 of which are in mainland China. They measure performance in 89 subjects across 12 pillars.

Stanford University achieves the strongest performance overall across the different subjects, while Tsinghua University is the top-performing institution in mainland China.
Overall, mainland China scores an average grade of B+ in the subject ratings, above the global average of a B. Chinese universities also score above average in 70 of the 89 subjects.
