What do Turkish soap operas have to do with?Times Higher Education¡¯s?Asia University Rankings? According to our deep dive into the internationalisation of higher education in certain countries, they are part of the reason students are flocking to Turkey to study.
But not all nations are seeing a rise in globalisation (measured by scores for international students, international faculty, and international research collaboration). China and Hong Kong have a different story to tell.
This is the 11th edition of our Asia University Rankings, and this year 669 universities are ranked, up from 616 last year. Thirty-three nations are represented, with the most universities coming from Japan (117), followed by China (95), India (75), Iran (65) and Turkey (61).
Over a decade¡¯s worth of solid data allows us to explore important trends in the region, such as Asia¡¯s growing influence on the spread of knowledge and ideas, as measured by citations.

Asia University Rankings 2023: results announced
As well as delving into trends in internationalisation and research citations, we have interviews with Rocky Tuan and Lily Kong, two of the region¡¯s most distinguished university leaders. We also have comment pieces exploring the dearth of new qualified leaders across the region, China¡¯s digital learning revolution and whether India can fulfil its higher education ambitions.
As always, thank you to the institutions that took the time to submit data for the rankings. You contribute to an ever richer dataset that continues to benefit the sector.
